BigTurnout for the Captain’s at Killeen Castle | |
Myo’s golfing history was made yesterday as Don O’Mahony became the first player to successfully defend the Captain’s Prize. In a tight finish at the magnificent Killeen Castle, four players came home with 35 points, but Don, the 2010 winner, pipped the field at the post, winning on countback. After what he described as a discouraging start in very wet conditions, Don and his playing partners were tempted at the turn to head for the 19th instead of the 10th, but they prevailed and Don scored 21 on the back nine to put his name on the Captain’s Trophy for a second time. Despite the weather – Evelyn Cusack of Met Éireann even apologised for the forecast! – we had a fantastic turnout for Dan O’Shea’s Captain’s Day, with 72 players defying the wet conditions to play this testing course. There was also a great crowd back for dinner in Myo’s and the celebrations went on until the small hours (we have forgotten most of the details). The visitor’s prize was also a repeat performance of last year with David Daly again taking the honours with 39 points. Five handicapper David has a better than average local knowledge of the magnificent Killeen Castle course – being the green-keeper there helps! Congratulations to Larry Keegan who not only took third place in his class, but won a day of coaching at the Dave Pelz Scoring Game School in the raffle. We look forward to seeing big cuts in Larry’s handicap after his visit to the renowned golf school based at Killeen Castle. Many thanks to everyone who bought tickets. Many thanks also to our sponsor for the outing, Captain Dan O’Shea, and to all who contributed to a magnificent day. |
